Q&A

Can Claude write a BAS or tax return for my Australian business?

Short answer

Claude can help prepare BAS and tax work, drafting supporting notes, sanity-checking GST calculations, summarising transaction categorisation, generating client questions. It cannot lodge or sign on your behalf; under Australian law only a TPB-registered tax or BAS agent (or you directly via myGov / Online Services) can do that.

Yes, with strict limits. Let me unpack what “yes” and “no” cover.

What Claude CAN do

  • Draft BAS supporting notes from your underlying Xero or MYOB data
  • Sanity-check GST collected vs GST paid, PAYG withholding, and other line items against the source transactions
  • Categorise transactions for bookkeeping prep (with high accuracy if you provide a few examples)
  • Reconcile patterns: flag unusual entries, identify likely errors, surface inconsistencies
  • Draft client letters explaining a return or BAS in plain English
  • Summarise an ATO ruling you’re trying to apply
  • Explain a complex situation before you talk to your accountant, saves their billable hour

What Claude CANNOT do

  • Lodge a BAS or tax return. Under Australian law, only:
  • You yourself (via myGov / Online Services for Business)
  • Your TPB-registered tax agent
  • Your TPB-registered BAS agent (for BAS only)

…can lodge. Claude is not registered with the TPB. It can prepare, never lodge.

  • Sign as the agent of record. Same reason. The signature line on a BAS or return is a legal artifact tied to a registered person or you.

  • Give tax advice that you’d legally rely on. “Tax advice” is regulated under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009. Claude isn’t a tax agent.

  • Audit your own work. AI sanity-checks have value; they’re not a substitute for a registered tax agent’s review.

The practical workflow that works

For a small business doing its own BAS through a bookkeeper:

  1. Bookkeeper maintains Xero (or you do it manually)
  2. Claude drafts the BAS calculations + flags issues, see our accountants guide
  3. You review the draft + Claude’s flags
  4. Registered BAS agent (if you use one) reviews + lodges
  5. Or you lodge directly via myGov if your business is small enough not to need an agent

For a larger business with a registered tax agent:

  1. Bookkeeper / internal finance team maintains records
  2. Claude assists with preparation, drafts, sanity checks
  3. Tax agent reviews everything before lodgement
  4. Tax agent lodges + signs

In both flows, AI compresses preparation time; the regulated human is still in the loop where the law requires.

What you should NOT do

  • Don’t feed Claude.ai (the free consumer chat) your client-identifying financial data. Free-tier ToS retain inputs in ways unsuitable for accounting work. Use the Anthropic API, Anthropic Console, or your accountant’s enterprise account.
  • Don’t assume Claude’s GST calculations are right without verifying against the source data. Claude is usually right; “usually” doesn’t fly at audit.
  • Don’t lodge directly off Claude’s output without your own (or your agent’s) review. The ATO doesn’t care who prepared it; they care who signed.

When AI genuinely helps with tax / BAS work

The biggest wins we’ve seen at Australian SMBs using Claude for tax + BAS prep:

  • 30-60% time reduction on monthly BAS prep
  • Caught 1 BAS error per ~30 quarters on the sanity-check workflow
  • Drafted plain-English client letters in 5 minutes vs 45 minutes
  • Reconciled supplier subscription line items 10x faster than manual

If you’d like to see the workflow set up in your specific Xero/MYOB stack, the Quick Start audit covers it, and we’ll route the agent-of-record bit to a TPB-registered partner where needed.
