Honest comparison

On Autopilot vs n8n.

n8n is brilliant — open source, self-hostable, free of per-operation pricing, and increasingly capable as an agent runtime. It is also a deep technical investment. Here's when n8n is the right call for your Australian SMB, and when paying for a bespoke build is the cheaper path.

When n8n is the right call

You have an in-house technical lead (or a comfortable engineering manager), you want to own the substrate, and your data/compliance posture requires self-hosting. n8n is a serious tool and many of the larger Australian SMBs we work with run it alongside or as the substrate for our agents.

When we're the right call

You do not have an engineer who can run n8n in production reliably (Docker, backups, monitoring, model API keys, upgrade cadence). The total cost of ownership for self-hosted n8n is higher than people think — and most Australian SMBs we audit do not have the bandwidth for it. We ship a working agent in 4 weeks; standing up a robust n8n stack often takes longer.

The honest comparison.

n8n (self-hosted) On Autopilot
Hosting + ops You run it. Docker, backups, monitoring, upgrades, model API keys = your problem Managed. We run the infrastructure, you use the agent.
Pricing $0 software + your engineering time + your hosting + your API keys Fixed AUD build + monthly retainer that covers infra
Capability ceiling Very high once configured — true agent runtimes with memory Equally high, but we build bespoke around your business
Time to live system Weeks of engineering + ongoing maintenance burden 5–14 days productised, 4 weeks bespoke, then ongoing managed
Best for Engineering-led teams who want substrate ownership Non-technical operators who want shipped systems, fast
n8n is the right answer for the SMB that has the engineering DNA to run it. We are the right answer for the SMB that doesn't, or that does and wants someone else to take the operational load. We have clients who started on self-hosted n8n, gave up on the maintenance burden, and asked us to take it over.

Before-you-decide questions.

Can you build on n8n if I already run it?

Yes — n8n is one of the substrates we support and we have clients who run their agents on n8n that we manage on a Growth retainer. If you've already invested in n8n and want bespoke agents on top, that's a natural fit. We do not insist on a particular substrate.

Is n8n self-hosted really free?

Technically yes — the software is free under the n8n Sustainable Use License. The total cost of ownership is not free. You pay for hosting ($20–$100/mo), engineering time to maintain it (significant), API keys to LLM providers ($50–$500/mo), monitoring + alerts, security patching, version upgrades. For an SMB without an in-house engineer, the maintenance cost easily exceeds a managed retainer with us.

What if I want to self-host but have you build the agents?

Most common pattern with our enterprise-leaning clients. We build the agents, you host them on your n8n / your AWS / your Azure. We document everything, hand over keys, and stay on retainer for ongoing builds. You get substrate ownership + our build velocity.
