Who can set up AI for a Brisbane business?
In Brisbane, as anywhere, the choice is between a freelancer, a large consultancy, an in-house hire and a managed AI provider. For a Queensland owner who would rather not manage the AI themselves, On Autopilot is the managed option: a Melbourne-based consultancy that builds and then runs the agents that answer enquiries, chase quotes and clear admin, from $497 for a single automation or $1,500 a month for managed AI (ex GST). There is no Brisbane office, and every call is booked in Queensland time.
The person on the other end of the audit is our founder, Jenn Yang, who also runs DotVA, a virtual assistant agency. The agents are built on Anthropic’s Claude and plug into software Queensland trades and clinics already use, such as ServiceM8, Xero, Cliniko and HubSpot. You own the code, prompts and settings, and the retainer can be stopped any month.
How does the Queensland time difference work?
Queensland stays on AEST all year. Victoria moves to daylight saving from 2am on Sunday 4 October 2026 until 3am on Sunday 4 April 2027 (NSW Government daylight saving dates, which match Victoria’s). In practice:

The practical effect is small but real: in summer, 5pm in Melbourne is 4pm in Brisbane, so we schedule calls, go-lives and deadlines inside Brisbane business hours, not Melbourne’s.
How much does an AI consultant cost in Brisbane?
Brisbane gets the national price list. For most trade and clinic owners the first spend is the AI Front Desk: $1,500 to set up and $199 a month. A $497 Quick Start covers one smaller automation, for example a follow-up message on quotes that have gone quiet. If you want several agents run for you, managed AI starts at $1,500 a month. Everything is ex GST and month to month, and the Claude usage behind each agent is included.

Where these figures come from: Upwork publishes automation project ranges in US dollars (converted here at the Reserve Bank rate for 2 October 2026); the consultancy range is from AusTender contract notices by Quantium, EY and Slalom, which usually include GST; the salary is SEEK’s data scientist figure for Brisbane, with on-costs added at base times 1.28 (as in our AI Cost Index), which includes the 12% superannuation guarantee.
Which Queensland rules matter for an AI project?
- Privacy: the federal Act, not a state one. Queensland’s Information Privacy Act 2009 covers government agencies, not private businesses or private healthcare providers; those follow the federal Privacy Act 1988 (Office of the Information Commissioner Queensland). Being small does not get a Brisbane clinic off the hook: the federal exemption for businesses turning over $3 million or less does not extend to health service providers (OAIC).
- Payroll tax is less likely to bite. Queensland’s payroll tax starts at $1,300,000 of annual wages, at 4.75% for employers with Australian wages of $6.5 million or less (Queensland Revenue Office). Among the mainland states only South Australia’s threshold is higher, so for most Brisbane small businesses the in-house versus outsourced decision comes down to salary, super and workload rather than tax.
- Automated decisions. From 10 December 2026, businesses covered by the Privacy Act must explain in their privacy policy any automated decisions that significantly affect people (OAIC). Our agents triage, reply and book; they do not make decisions like that.
Where does AI pay off first for Brisbane businesses?
Greater Brisbane had 242,271 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2025, and 61.9% had no employees (ABS Data by region). For owner-run businesses the first build should take a job off the owner:

- Queensland grants. None were open as at October 2026; Business Boost round 4 closed on 31 August 2026. The Business Queensland grants schedule lists upcoming rounds.
- Queensland Small Business Commissioner. Information and support for small businesses, with mediation for commercial and retail leasing disputes (QSBC).
- Events. Open Summit AI is at Brisbane City Hall on 11 November 2026 (organiser). It is a paid event.
