At checkout Australians typically see roughly A$30–35 once GST, card fees or app-store pricing are added. How does ChatGPT’s cost change with business size?
A sole trader usually needs Free or Plus, A$0–29 a month before GST. A team of 2–10 people is better served by Business at about A$29–36 per user, because business data is excluded from model training by default and one admin controls access. At 10–50 staff the bill is driven by seat count, so give seats to daily users and set a clear rule for everyone else.
- Sole trader: Plus is the usual starting point. Go, at about A$12, suits you if the free limits are the only problem. If you discuss clients, turn off model training in Data Controls.
- 2–10 staff: five Business seats on annual billing are US$100 a month, about A$144.
- 10–50 staff: twenty Business seats on annual billing are about A$576 a month. Add Premium seats only for people who keep hitting limits, and ask OpenAI for an Enterprise quote if you need more controls.

Is ChatGPT free in Australia?
Yes. ChatGPT’s free tier works in Australia and is enough to test the tool and handle occasional tasks such as drafting an email, summarising a document or explaining a spreadsheet formula. Limits on the strongest model are lower than on paid plans, and OpenAI adjusts them often. Free-tier chats can be used to train OpenAI’s models unless you switch that off.
What the free tier suits, and what it doesn’t:
- Fine on free: occasional drafting, general questions, brainstorming, summarising a document with nothing confidential in it.
- Not suited: daily business workflows (you hit limits mid-task), anything containing client or personal information, and teams that need shared controls.
A sensible path: test free tiers first, pay for one plan once you use it most days, and move staff onto Business seats before anyone pastes in client data.
Does ChatGPT use your business data to train its models?
On the consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus and Pro), your chats may be used to improve OpenAI’s models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings, Data Controls. Business, Enterprise and the API are excluded from training by default. That difference, more than any feature, is the reason to put a team on Business rather than personal Plus accounts.

Why does ChatGPT cost more in AUD than the US price?
Three things stack on top of the US$20: the exchange rate (about A$29 on 02/10/2026), 10% GST for consumers, and the 2–3% foreign transaction fee many Australian cards charge. Subscribing through an app store can also mean a different AUD price. A GST-registered business that gives its ABN and states it is registered for GST should generally not be charged GST.

Does ChatGPT Business have a minimum number of users?
Yes, two. Standard Business seats are US$25 per user a month billed monthly, or US$20 billed annually, about A$36 or A$29 before GST. Premium seats with more usage are US$125 monthly or US$100 annually. Enterprise is quoted separately for larger organisations.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth paying for over the free tier?
If you use it most working days, usually yes: higher limits on the stronger models, more file uploads and fewer interruptions mid-task. Plus does not change the training default, though. Like the free tier, it can use your chats to improve models unless you turn that off in Data Controls.
Can I claim ChatGPT as a business expense in Australia?
Generally yes. A subscription used to earn assessable income is usually a deductible operating expense in the year you pay it, with private use apportioned out. Keep the invoices from your OpenAI account and check your own situation with your tax agent.
Should I pay for both ChatGPT and Claude?
Not at first. Both individual plans are US$20 a month and both have free tiers. Try the same real tasks in each for a week or two, then pay for the one you reach for more. A second subscription is only worth it once you use both daily for different jobs.
