All converted at ~1.50 USD-to-AUD with a ~2% card currency fee, typical for an Australian bank-issued Visa or Mastercard in May 2026. Use a fee-free card (Revolut, Wise, HSBC Global Money) and you’ll pay closer to the mid-market rate, about $27 AUD on Plus.

What you actually get on each tier

Free. GPT-4o (capped per hour), GPT-5 (very limited daily messages), basic image generation, voice mode, and basic ChatGPT search. Good for casual personal use. Avoid for confidential business work because free-tier conversations may be used for training unless you opt out in settings.

Plus ($30 AUD/mo). GPT-5 with generous daily limits, full DALL-E image generation, advanced voice mode, ChatGPT search with citations, file uploads, custom GPTs (create + use), Sora video (capped), priority access during peak traffic. This is the default for any business use.

Pro ($300 AUD/mo). Everything Plus has, plus longer context windows, GPT-5 Pro (the deep-reasoning model that takes 30-90s per response and gives substantially better answers on complex tasks), much higher Sora caps, and effectively unlimited usage on the consumer models. Worth it only if you’d otherwise hit daily caps.

Team ($36 AUD/user/mo). Plus features for your whole organisation, admin console, shared workspaces, SOC 2 + GDPR compliance, no training on your data. 2-user minimum, billed annually. The right choice for small AU businesses with 2-10 staff using AI daily.

Enterprise. Custom-priced, usually $90+ AUD/user/mo. Single sign-on (SSO), unlimited GPT-5 + GPT-5 Pro, expanded admin controls, audit logs, optional Australian data residency via Azure OpenAI Service.

How Australians actually pay

OpenAI bills consumer plans in USD via Stripe. Your card statement shows USD with a conversion to AUD using your card’s FX rate. The math, for ChatGPT Plus in May 2026:

• $20 USD list price
• × ~1.50 AUD/USD interbank rate
• = $30 AUD raw conversion
• • ~2% card currency-conversion fee (varies by issuer)
• = ~$30-31 AUD final monthly charge

Pro plans (and any volume) get noticeably more expensive at $300 AUD/month, where the 2% currency fee adds $6 every month. A fee-free card (Revolut, Wise, HSBC Global Money) saves about $72 AUD/year on a Pro account.

GST treatment for Australian businesses

OpenAI is registered for GST in Australia. The pricing on their site excludes GST.

• Consumer accounts (no ABN): OpenAI charges 10% GST directly. You see ~$33 AUD on the credit card statement for Plus.
• Business accounts with ABN registered for GST: OpenAI doesn’t charge GST. Instead you self-account via reverse charge in your BAS. Net cost is the pre-GST AUD figure (~$30 AUD on Plus).

Make sure your billing info in OpenAI’s account settings has your ABN entered. The reverse-charge mechanism doesn’t kick in until that’s set.

Is ChatGPT cheaper than Claude in Australia?

Roughly the same. Both consumer paid plans sit at $30 AUD/month. The differences:

• Anthropic invoices in AUD via their Australian entity (direct, no FX surprises).
• OpenAI invoices in USD via Stripe (FX + currency-conversion fee applies).

Can I get an Australian data-residency option?

Yes, via Azure OpenAI Service in the Australia East region. Same models, hosted in Microsoft Australia data centres, with data staying onshore. Requires enterprise pricing (not available on consumer plans). Setup is a 1-2 hour Azure portal job for someone who’s used Azure before. Useful for regulated-industry clients (some financial services under APRA, some health-sector under state privacy acts, government contracts with data-residency clauses).

What about ChatGPT for my whole team?

ChatGPT Team is the simplest path for 2-25 staff. $36 AUD/user/month billed annually, admin console, shared workspaces, SOC 2 compliant, and no training on your team’s data. Above 25 users or with SSO requirements, jump to Enterprise.

For most Australian SMBs we work with, Team plus a couple of personal Claude Pro accounts is the right shape: $36 + $30 per person per month, total ~$66 AUD per active AI user. Tax-deductible as a business expense.

What’s NOT in the price

• Custom GPT execution costs in API mode (if you build a GPT that calls APIs, those API charges are separate).
• Sora video generation in volume (Plus + Pro have generous but not unlimited caps).
• Voice mode in real-time (no extra charge in Plus, capped daily; uncapped in Pro).
• Image generation in volume (caps on Plus; effectively unlimited on Pro).

What to do if you only have $30 AUD/month for AI

Pick one of: ChatGPT Plus OR Claude Pro. We slightly favour Claude Pro for business writing + code, and ChatGPT Plus for image generation + Microsoft integration. The free tier of the other one will cover your secondary needs.
