Q&A

What's the difference between Claude and ChatGPT?

Short answer

Claude (by Anthropic) and ChatGPT (by OpenAI) are the two leading consumer AI chat tools. Claude tends to be more careful and conversational; ChatGPT is more agentic out of the box. For Australian small business in 2026, most operators benefit from running both.

Both are excellent. They’re not interchangeable. Here’s the practical breakdown.

The builders

  • Claude is built by Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers in 2021. The Claude family includes Opus (smartest), Sonnet (balanced), Haiku (fastest).
  • ChatGPT is built by OpenAI, founded 2015. The GPT family includes GPT-5, GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, and the o-series reasoning models.

Different research labs, different design philosophies, similar capability surfaces in 2026.

Where each one wins

Claude wins for

  • Long-form writing. Better tonal consistency; less of the “AI voice” that ChatGPT can lean into.
  • Code, especially Claude Code as a CLI tool. No equivalent OpenAI agentic CLI matches it.
  • Long-context reasoning. Claude’s 200k+ context window is more reliably used end-to-end than ChatGPT’s.
  • Constitutional AI alignment. Claude is generally more careful about refusing harmful requests and more transparent about uncertainty.

ChatGPT wins for

  • Image generation (native DALL·E 3 / GPT Image is stronger than what Claude offers).
  • Voice mode for hands-free interaction.
  • Browser-augmented research is slightly more current in real-world testing.
  • Microsoft Office integration via Copilot (which uses GPT under the hood).
  • Custom GPT marketplace for distribution if you want to publish a configurable AI.

For Australian small business specifically

Both ship in AUD-billable forms. Both support Australian English (set it in your system prompt or CLAUDE.md). Both integrate cleanly with common AU stacks (Xero, Shopify, Gmail), Claude via MCP, ChatGPT via Custom GPTs + actions.

Most operators we work with end up with both: Claude Pro + Claude Code for the heavy lifting, ChatGPT Plus or Microsoft Copilot for the lighter day-to-day. The marginal $31 AUD/month for the second tool is almost always worth it.

When to pick just one

  • Tightest possible budget: ChatGPT Plus. The free tier is also more capable than Claude’s.
  • You work mostly with code and files: Claude Code (no ChatGPT equivalent).
  • You live in Microsoft Office: GPT (via Copilot).
  • You want maximum care around hallucinations: Claude tends to flag uncertainty more readily.

What about Gemini?

Google’s Gemini is competitive but lags both Claude and ChatGPT in most Australian-relevant tasks as of mid-2026. Worth watching; not yet a daily-driver replacement for either.
