Q&A

How much does Claude cost per month in AUD?

Short answer

Most Australian Claude users spend $30-120 AUD/month. Light use (Claude.ai chat only) lands at $30 AUD on the Pro plan. Heavy Claude Code use with prompt caching averages $60-150 AUD. Outliers go higher.

Depends on which Claude product and how heavily you use it. Here are the real numbers across the three main ways Australians use Claude.

Claude.ai chat (the web app)

Two tiers:

  • Free tier: $0 AUD/month. Limited message count per day, no Projects, no file uploads at scale.
  • Claude Pro: $20 USD ≈ $31 AUD/month. 5x more usage, file uploads, Projects, priority access.
  • Claude Max: $100 USD ≈ $155 AUD/month. 20x more usage, longer outputs, early access to new features.
  • Claude Team: $25 USD per user/month, minimum 5 users (~$200 AUD/month for the smallest team).

For most Australian SMB operators using Claude as a chat tool, Pro at $31 AUD/month is the right starting point.

Claude Code (the CLI)

Pay-per-token. No flat-rate option as of May 2026.

Real Australian bills, averaged across the last 6 months:

Use caseMonthly AUD
Occasional non-dev use (spreadsheets, email drafts, weekly)$15-40
Solo developer, 1-2 hours/day, Sonnet + cache$40-90
Solo developer, 4-6 hours/day, mixed Opus/Sonnet$120-250
Heavy agentic work (background agents, multi-agent runs)$200-500

What drives the variance:

  • Model choice, Opus is 5x Sonnet, 15x Haiku
  • Prompt caching discipline, cached input is 10% of normal; the difference between caching and not is 50-80% on bill
  • CLAUDE.md size, long context files re-bill on every turn
  • Session length, short bursty sessions cache poorly; long sessions amortise

Anthropic API (custom apps)

If you’re a developer building a product on top of Claude, you pay the same per-token rates as Claude Code:

ModelPer 1M inputPer 1M output
Opus 4.7$15 USD ≈ $23 AUD$75 USD ≈ $116 AUD
Sonnet 4.6$3 USD ≈ $4.65 AUD$15 USD ≈ $23 AUD
Haiku 4.5$1 USD ≈ $1.55 AUD$5 USD ≈ $7.75 AUD

A high-traffic product (10k users/day, ~5k tokens per request) using Sonnet might bill $500-2000 USD/month. Heavily Opus-dependent products run 5-10x higher.

Combined: typical Australian Claude spend by user type

ProfileLikely comboMonthly AUD
SMB owner, light chat useClaude.ai Pro only$31
SMB owner using Claude Code occasionallyPro + ~$30 API$60
Solo developerPro + $80 Claude Code$110
Heavy developer + agentsPro + $200 Claude Code$231
Small team (5 ppl)Claude Team + Claude Code shared$400-700

What you don’t pay for

  • The Claude Code CLI software itself
  • The Anthropic Console
  • Prompt caching as a feature (the discount is automatic)
  • MCP servers (most are free; some commercial ones charge separately)

Setting budget guardrails

Always set a usage alert in Anthropic Console. We recommend: hard cap at 2x your expected spend, soft alert at 1x. This catches runaway agent loops (a single misbehaving overnight agent can easily burn $50 USD).

Australian small business operators who set caps from day one almost never have bill surprises. Those who don’t, do.

Where to start

If you’re new to Claude in 2026:

  1. Sign up for the Anthropic Console (free)
  2. Add $20 USD ($31 AUD) in API credit
  3. Set a $40 USD alert
  4. Install Claude Code and use it for a week
  5. Check your actual usage; calibrate from there

Most people overestimate what they’ll spend. The pricing is more accessible in 2026 than the headline rates suggest, especially once caching kicks in.
