As at October 2026, Claude Pro costs US$20 a month (about A$33 including GST at checkout; check current pricing), Max costs US$100 or US$200, and Team seats are US$20–25 per person. Pro includes Claude Code, while automated or very heavy work is billed per token through the API. The AUD column is a straight conversion before tax. Australian consumers pay 10% GST on top, and a typical bank card adds a 2–3% foreign transaction fee, so Pro lands at about A$33 at checkout on a personal card. A GST-registered business that gives Anthropic its ABN should generally not be charged GST (see claiming AI tools as a tax deduction).
How does Claude’s cost change with business size?
A sole trader pays nothing on the Free plan, or US$20 a month for Pro (about A$33 including GST at checkout). A team of 2–10 people on Team Standard seats pays about A$29–36 per person, and a business of 10–50 people typically mixes Standard seats with a few Premium seats for heavy users, plus a small API bill for any automations (list prices, before GST).
- Sole trader: Pro covers chat, file analysis and Claude Code; about A$24 a month billed annually.
- 2–10 staff: Team needs at least two seats, and every Team seat includes Claude Code. Five Standard seats billed annually are US$100 a month, about A$144.
- 10–50 staff: twenty Standard seats billed annually are about A$576 a month, plus Premium seats (A$144 each) for people who code or analyse data all day. Agents that serve customers or staff are billed on the API; a typical productised agent uses $3–15 a month.

How much does the Claude API cost per million tokens?
As at October 2026, Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs US$2 per million input tokens and US$10 per million output tokens (about A$2.88 and A$14.40). Opus 5.5 is US$4 and US$20, Haiku 4.5 is US$1 and US$5, and the top-tier Fable 5.1 is US$10 and US$50. API payments are in USD and exclude GST.

Older models now cost more than current ones: Opus 4.6 to 4.8 and Opus 5 are US$5 and US$25, and Sonnet 4.6 is US$3 and US$15, so an app still calling them can save by moving to Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5. Also note: 5-minute cache writes cost 1.25x input, the Batch API is 50% off, and Claude 4.7 and later models count up to about 35% more tokens for the same text than older models.
What does a typical month of Claude usage cost?
Most individuals pay a flat US$20 for Pro (about A$33 including GST at checkout), cheaper than the API for typical personal use. API spend depends on model, volume and caching. Is Claude Code free in Australia?
The Claude Code software is free to install, but using it is not. It runs on a paid plan (Pro, Max and every Team seat include it, within usage limits) or on pay-as-you-go API credit bought in USD through the Claude Console. The Free plan excludes it. For one interactive user, start on Pro and move to Max if you keep hitting limits.
How do you keep a Claude bill under control?
Set a monthly spend limit in the Claude Console before the first run, at about twice what you expect, and default to Sonnet 5.5. Use Opus 5.5 for hard reasoning and Haiku 4.5 for simple, high-volume jobs such as triage. Keep CLAUDE.md files and system prompts short and stable so caching works, and send anything that can wait through the Batch API at half price.
- Cache reads cost 10% of the input rate (5% on Opus 5.5), but only while the start of the prompt, re-sent every turn, stays identical.
- Use /compact at task boundaries, and check the Console usage page monthly, most expensive sessions first.

Is there a free trial of Claude?
In two ways. The Free plan gives you Claude chat at no cost with tighter usage limits, and new API accounts get a small amount of free credit to test pay-as-you-go usage. Claude Code itself needs Pro or above, or API credit, so the API credit is the cheapest way to try it.
Should I pay for Claude Max or use the API?
Max is a flat US$100 or US$200 a month with usage limits; the API bills every token. For one person coding interactively most of the day, Max usually works out cheaper. For agents that run unattended or serve your customers, the API is the right fit because you pay only for what runs and can set a spend limit.
Does Anthropic charge GST in Australia?
Claude prices are listed in USD excluding tax. Australian consumers are charged 10% GST on top. A GST-registered business that gives Anthropic its ABN and states it is registered for GST should generally not be charged GST. Your card may also add a 2–3% foreign transaction fee. Can I claim Claude as a business expense?
Generally yes. Software subscriptions and API usage used to earn assessable income are usually deductible operating expenses in the year you pay them, with any private use apportioned out. Keep the invoices from your Claude account. Check your own situation with your tax agent.
Is Claude cheaper than ChatGPT in Australia?
For one person they cost the same: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both US$20 a month (about A$33 including GST at checkout; check current pricing) as at October 2026. ChatGPT also has a cheaper Go tier at US$8, while Claude Pro drops to US$17 a month on annual billing. Team and Business seats are US$20–25 on both.
