The five AI bills every Australian small business is paying in 2026

From Claude API to Microsoft Copilot to that 'AI SEO tool' someone sold you in 2024, here's the typical Australian SMB AI stack and what it costs in AUD.

Most Australian small businesses we audit are paying for more AI than they realise. Some of it earns its keep. A surprising amount doesn’t. Here’s the typical stack as of mid-2026, in real AUD.

Bill 1: The chat tool ($31 AUD/month)

Almost everyone has either Claude Pro ($31 AUD) or ChatGPT Plus ($31 AUD), or both. This is the foundation, daily writing, brainstorming, research, drafts.

ROI: very high. The $31 AUD typically pays back in the first day of any week. If you’re not paying for at least one of these in 2026, you’re under-equipped.

Bill 2: The dev / agentic tool ($40-200 AUD/month)

Claude Code (metered, ~$40-150 AUD), Cursor ($31 AUD flat), GitHub Copilot ($15-30 AUD flat), or some combo. For non-developer operators, Claude Code in headless mode for background agents falls here too.

ROI: high if you do real work with it; near-zero if you don’t. Cancel if your monthly token usage is under $5 AUD, you’re not using it.

Bill 3: The Office integration ($30-90 AUD/month)

Microsoft 365 Copilot (~$45 AUD/seat/month) or Google Workspace AI features (bundled with paid tiers). For teams that live in Word/Excel/PowerPoint or Docs/Sheets/Slides.

ROI: medium-high for daily users; medium for occasional. Heavily underused at most clients we audit, people pay for Copilot but don’t shift their workflow to use it.

Bill 4: The marketing AI ($0-300 AUD/month)

Beehiiv (free up to 2.5k subs, $39 USD/month after), Klaviyo with AI features (bundled), Jasper ($60 USD/month), Copy.ai ($40 USD/month), various “AI for SEO” tools ($30-200 USD/month each).

ROI: highly variable. Newsletter tools (Beehiiv, ConvertKit, Klaviyo) earn their keep. Standalone “AI writing” SaaS rarely beats just using Claude for the same task. AI SEO tools are mostly snake oil in 2026.

This is the bill category where we save clients the most money.

Bill 5: The optimisation SaaS ($100-600 AUD/month)

Triple Whale, Northbeam, Polar Analytics, ad-platform optimisers, AI rev-ops tools.

ROI: legitimately great for some (Triple Whale on a serious e-commerce stack), legitimately terrible for others (most “AI optimises your Meta bids” tools).

Rule of thumb: if the tool’s category is “the platform’s own algorithm with a different UI,” you’re paying for branding.

Typical AU SMB monthly total

Business sizeRealistic monthly AUD
Sole trader$30-80
Small team (2-5 people)$200-500
Mid-size (10-30 people)$500-1,500
Larger SMB ($5m+ rev)$1,500-5,000+

The audit we recommend running quarterly

  1. List every AI-related subscription, with its monthly cost in AUD
  2. For each: when did you last use it? (If over 30 days, cancel)
  3. For each: what does it do that Claude couldn’t do for cheaper? (If “nothing”, cancel)
  4. For each: is the underlying tech actually AI, or is “AI” the branding? (Marketing labels everything as AI in 2026, be sceptical)
  5. Aggregate: total what you’re paying. Is it earning back at least 3x?

We do this audit for clients as part of the Quick Start engagement. Average savings discovered: $250-450 AUD/month across a typical small Australian business.
