Is Claude Code free in Australia?
The software is free. The model usage isn't. You pay Anthropic per token in USD (about $4.65 AUD per million tokens on Sonnet 4.6 input). A small free trial credit is included when you sign up to the Anthropic Console.
The Claude Code CLI software is free to download, install and use. The cost comes from the language model usage that the CLI invokes.
How the pricing actually works
You sign up for the Anthropic Console (free), add a payment method, and prepay credits in USD. Claude Code burns those credits as you use it.
Pricing per million tokens (USD, as of May 2026):

In AUD (FX ~1.55), Sonnet costs about $4.65 / $23.25 per million tokens. With prompt caching (on by default in Claude Code), input cost drops by up to 90% on multi-turn sessions.

How to keep it low
- Set a budget alert in Anthropic Console immediately. Default to “annoy me if I cross $40 USD” until you know your usage.
- Stay on Sonnet by default. Switch to Opus only when reasoning quality matters.
- Use prompt caching (it’s automatic in Claude Code, just keep your CLAUDE.md stable).
- /compact at task boundaries to preserve cache while clearing irrelevant context.
- Audit your top 5 expensive sessions monthly, patterns emerge quickly.

Free trial
Anthropic gives you a small starter credit when you sign up, currently $5 USD, sometimes more depending on promotion. Use it to get a feel for the tool before committing to ongoing spend.
Anthropic Pro vs API billing
Claude.ai Pro is a $20 USD/month subscription for the chat web interface. It does not include Claude Code usage. Claude Code bills against your Anthropic Console API credits separately. You can have both, neither, or either.
What about flat-rate Claude Code?
As of May 2026, there’s no flat-rate plan for Claude Code via the Anthropic Console. Pay-per-token only. Anthropic has indicated team / enterprise plans are in development; nothing publicly available yet.
For most Australian small business users, pay-per-token works out cheaper than a flat-rate would anyway, you only pay when you use it, no monthly minimum.
Is there a free alternative?
If $30-50 AUD/month is genuinely a blocker, look at:
- GitHub Copilot ($15 AUD/month flat, much less capable for agentic work)
- Open-source models (Llama 3.1, Qwen, etc, run locally, free but slower and lower quality)
- OpenAI’s free ChatGPT tier for ad-hoc work outside the CLI
None are equivalent. Claude Code earns its bill if you have real work for it to do.
